Research psychiatrists worried that the children were being given a label that wasn’t right for them, and saddled with the sentence of a serious mental illness for the rest of their lives. The condition will be called temper dysregulation disorder, and it will be seen as a brain or biological dysfunction, but not as a necessarily lifelong condition like bipolar. Doctors have been using the bipolar definition for adults to diagnose kids. Patients with bipolar have one or more manic episodes and often also experience major depressive episodes.

Posted on December 11, by Dennis Many people write to me about a number of different things. I find myself pointing out that a number of these people are relating red flags of an abusive relationship. Sometimes, we Bipolar people can do awful things during an unwell cycle that are entirely out of character for who we actually are.

There is a camp of people where those terrible things are a general part of their personality and character. They have toxic qualities about their personality that goes past what Bipolar Disorder is actually responsible for. A well-adjusted person who is open, loving, and accepting makes for an ideal target for a predator. In answering these messages, I will typically point out the red flags and then provide links to good resources that point these same things out.

A majority of the time, I get one of the following responses: Things were great until they got unwell. Abusive people are rarely completely awful people. Most of them have positive qualities about them. Media likes to depict bad people as damaged to the core, which is the only reason I can think of for this perception.

Real life is rarely that black and white. Instead, the abusive person wears whatever mask is socially acceptable.

Bipolar spouse What does research tell us about the bipolar spouse? Is it possible to have a happy and healthy relationship if you have bipolar disorder or are married to someone with bipolar disorder? The picture that comes out of the studies done to date is very mixed. What is particularly striking is the difficulty in separating cause and effect.

Is it the chicken or the egg? For example, we know that bipolar disorder erodes the quality or ALL interpersonal relationships, and marriage is no exception. How many of us look at it the other way around? What I mean is,have you ever considered that marital problems may be a trigger for mood episodes, and it is stress somewhere in the relationship that is making the bipolar spouse worse?

Overall, my guess is that the former applies. It is easy for a couple to fall into a downward spiral where the spouse with bipolar disorder behaves in ways both highly provocative and highly reactive. There is also sometimes an infectious, contagious type of quality to bipolar disorder when one spouse is afflicted. Thus the relationship can be very turbulent and uncertain. It is common for spouses of people with bipolar disorder to understand and be extremely, even overly, solicitous in response to depression in their partner, but to have more difficulty in seeing manic episodes as part of the illness.

Manic behavior is more likely to be perceived as malicious and deliberate, especially after the partner with bipolar disorder has been stable for a while and acting in a more loving, consistent, and predictable manner.

But there are a few things you should know about dating someone with bipolar. And here are 10 of them. 1. An argument is not a sign of bipolar. Being agitated and angry may be a sign of mania.

Benzos such as ativan , sleeping pills such as Ambien , antidepressants SSRI and SSNI, wellbutrin did not do anything and antipsychotics at low doses, and oh yes, Adderall, a stimulant, all caused me to get extremely angry over nothing, with the twin horrid side effect of being unable to control my behavior.

I got a borderline diagnosis due to my behaviors which suddenly appeared in my early 30’s, and the idiot doctors never figured out that the medications they were giving me were causing so many problems. Many illegal drugs or alcohol could also cause such behaviors. Or he is just a bad guy, due to past experiences plus underlying personality.

Bipolar by iteself should not cause such behaviors. I was told for years by my docs that it was the bipolar or that I was borderline, and it was the damned pills! I couldn’t control my behavior competely no matter how I tried!

Dating a Person with Bipolar … How to know when to hold on, and realize when to let go.

He was diagnosed about 7 or 8 years ago, on meds for a while then we just ignored the problem thinking it would go away. Three years ago I left after a very bad manic episode and he would not seek any professional help. When I said I was leaving it turned into an even worse episode that landed him in jail for a DUI I think he was trying to kill himself with the use of the car. I left for two months and he did everything right.

Got help, swore he would stay on meds, let me have my freedom, etc.

Everybody knows someone with bipolar disorder, whether it’s a family member, coworker or friends, but they might not recognize the warning signs of the condition.

Comments At the end of my first date with Sara, she moved in with me. You might think the date was extraordinary. By the time the ice in my soda had melted, I’d fallen in love. Sara was twenty-seven, and what people used to call a wag: She could recount every failed Everest expedition in mesmerizing detail — the sort of a talent I would expect of a rock climber, not someone who’d never gone camping.

I kept wondering why no one had snapped her up. Then I found out.
